Operation Smile has announced helmer/producer/scribe Tom Shadyac will receive the Universal Smile Award for his crowd-pleasing laffers –“Bruce Almightly” has rounded $240 million this summer — and his philanthropic efforts at Smile’s West Coast benefit and gala skedded for Sept. 24 at the Beverly Hilton.
He has been active with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, LeRoy Haynes Center for Children and Family Services, the Art of Elysium and the Cambodian Land Mine Museum Relief Fund.
Shadyac shares the honors with fellow humanitarian and new L.A. Laker, Karl Malone.
Operation Smile is a nonprofit medical relief organization which provides reconstructive surgery and related health care to indigent children and adolescents in developing countries and the United States.
Larry King will emcee the event, joined by warblers Barry Manilow and newlywed Jessica Simpson.
Kudos feting USC’s Elizabeth Daley and Dr. Randy Sherman with the Wallis Annenberg Public Service Award and the Medical Visionary Award, respectively, also will be presented during the evening.
In addition, the Chamberlain award will be bestowed posthumously to Wilt Chamberlain, whose estate, represented by Sy Goldberg, will present a gift of $1,000,000 to the Operation.
