LONDON — Peter Chernin, president and chief operating officer of News Corp. and chairman-CEO of the Fox Group, will receive the 11th Mipcom Personality of the Year Award at a gala dinner Oct. 11 in Cannes.
Award will honor Chernin’s outstanding career and contributions to the TV industry. Chernin joined the group in 1989 and has built a reputation as an executive with a unique mastery of the creative and corporate sides of the entertainment business.
“I am honored to accept the recognition of as prestigious a gathering as Mipcom,” Chernin said. “I am very privileged to be working in such a vital and vibrant industry. The potential of television — and the threats and competition against it — have never been greater. I look forward to meeting these challenges together with colleagues from all over the world.”
From 1989 to 1992 Chernin was president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting. Under his leadership, Fox launched hits “The Simpsons,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Melrose Place” and “The X-Files.”
Between 1992 and 1996, Chernin was chairman and CEO for 20th Century Fox Entertainment, overseeing all aspects of the studio. Productions included “Titanic,” the top-grossing movie of all time ($1.8 billion at the world box office).
“He deserves this award because he has propelled News Corp.’s TV and film businesses into leading positions globally, thanks to his exceptional ability to engage with the needs and aspirations of people worldwide and then define, market and distribute content to satisfy them,” Reed Midem CEO Paul Zilk said.
