Loews vet Groves to think big for Imax

Exec to spread use of company's technology, distrib'n

Loews Cineplex vet Phil Groves was appointed to the newly created post of VP film distribution and development at Imax on Monday.

Groves worked for General Cinemas prior to joining Loews Cineplex predecessor Cineplex Odeon in 1987. At Imax, he will be charged with helping to spread use of the giant-screen company’s format-conversion technology, Imax DMR, as well as the distribution of original large-format pics.

Based in Santa Monica, Foster will report to Larry O’Reilly, senior veep theater development and film distribution, and Greg Foster, film entertainment prexy.

“Phil has been a passionate supporter of Imax DMR, and his proven track record makes him a great asset for advancing the company’s commercial initiatives,” O’Reilly said.

“We expect Phil’s excellent relationships with the Hollywood studios and the exhibition industry to be a driving force in continuing the expansion and distribution of both Imax DMR and original Imax films,” Foster said.

Groves cited “terrific growth opportunities” for Imax businesses.
