Inside Move: Showrunner shakeup at ‘Den’

Aubuchon asked to step down, to remain writer/producer

“The Lyon’s Den” has new masters.

“Den” scribes/exec producers Kevin Falls and Dan Sackheim have been elevated to co-showrunners of NBC’s Sunday night Rob Lowe-starrer after producers Brad Grey Television and 20th Century Fox TV quietly asked series creator Remi Aubuchon (“24”) to step down as showrunner last week.

Creative differences are said to be the reason for the move, with the studios preferring a shift toward more close-ended legal stories and Aubuchon wanting to delve more into the murder mystery mythology established in the pilot seg.

While the decision to make a change came from the studios, NBC concurred with the choice, industry insiders said. Aubuchon is staying with the show as a writer/producer.

Peacock execs have made no secret of their disappointment in “Den’s” early ratings, and 20th and BGTV no doubt hope the showrunner shift will give NBC another reason to order additional episodes of the skein.
