Pop artist Peter Max will add his imprint to CBS’ upcoming 75th anniversary party.
The Eye has commissioned Max to create official artwork for “CBS at 75,” the live three-hour special set to air Nov. 2 from the Hammerstein Ballroom at New York’s Manhattan Center Studios.
As part of the gig, Max will also create an original piece of art that somehow incorporates the network’s Eye logo. CBS will use the artwork in its marketing campaign and in the special.
CBS — and Max — are a little older, and probably a little wiser, since their last collaboration: The May 1970 program “The 5th Dimension Special: An Odyssey in the Cosmic Universe of Peter Max.”
Spec featured the singing group performing their hits (such as “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In”) set against a groovy backdrop of Max’s “cosmic universe.” Glen Campbell, Arte Johnson, Joey Heatherton and Flip Wilson also appeared.
Max is probably better known for his art work — including portraits of world leaders and his pieces for events such as the Grammy Awards, Super Bowl and World’s Fair. A Continental Airlines 777 jumbo jet is currently in use as a canvas for Max’s art.
