‘Idol’ stars not idle

Clarkson, Studdard topline holiday spec

Fox is giving “American Idol” fans an early holiday present, while ABC isn’t being idle in promoting new Thursday drama “Threat Matrix.”

Alphabet has decided to air a repeat of “Matrix” tonight and next Monday in place of the previously skedded “PrimeTime Monday.” ABC no doubt wants to give the show some added exposure outside of its killer Thursday timeslot.

As for Fox, net has ordered up an original “Idol” Christmas spec featuring Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and several other stars from the first two seasons of the hit talent competish singing classic Yuletide tunes.

Show airs Nov. 25

Hourlong spec will air Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m. — two days before Thanksgiving and, more importantly, the penultimate night of the November sweeps.

“Idol” producers FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment had been expected to produce at least one or two “Idol” specs for the fall following the decision to delay the return of “American Juniors” (Daily Variety, Aug. 28).

Producers of the show are set to release CD “American Idol: The Great Holiday Classics” tomorrow. Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders for the holiday compilation.Interestingly, “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest and the show’s three judges won’t be a part of the spec, a Fox spokesman confirmed.
