George Jay, record promoter and agent, died Dec. 7 in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 85.

Jay was a tireless promoter and so-called hype artist who in the post-payola days specialized in promoting pop and rock singles to radio stations around the country. Jay published a newsletter, Inner-Views, which detailed disc jockey job changes, records he was promoting and DJ jokes.

He was known for his personal touch, such as calling nearly every DJ in the country on his birthday, and maintaining an informal job listing service for out-of-work jockeys.

He later opened an eponymous agency, the George Jay Agency, and was instrumental in fostering the career of Michelle Pfeiffer as well as representing unusual character actors. More recently, he worked as a commercials agent with Sonjia Warren Brandon’s Commercials Unlimited.

He is survived by son Mark, a music technician, and a grandson.
