Fox Broadcasting Co. has signed feature thesp DJ Qualls (“The New Guy”) to a talent holding/development deal.
Net is looking to develop a half-hour comedy for Qualls based on an autobiographical idea he pitched the network. Qualls is expected to take an active role in its creation and development of the show, which would focus on a young man working at an ambulance-chasing personal injury law firm.
While the web has the right to place Qualls in another project, Fox casting exec VP Marcia Shulman said the net “fully intends to develop his show.”
“We sat down with DJ to say hello, and he started telling us about his life before he was an actor. I saw that there was a show there and called in our development people,” Shulman said. “He’s just totally funny and charming, and a really smart guy.”
In addition to starring in “The New Guy,” Qualls’ other feature credits include “The Core” and “Road Trip.” On the small screen, Qualls had a role in the 1998 CBS pic “Mama Flora’s Family.”
Thesp and his management reps — Peter Principato, Paul Young and E. Brian Dobbins — are expected to produce the Fox project, though no formal decisions on credit will be made until a studio is attached.
