TOKYO — Kaz Tadashiki, the former chief operating officer at Gaga Communications, has joined independent production and publicity firm Movie-Eye Entertainment as partner, prexy and CEO — a rare move by a Japanese executive away from the cushy perks of corporate life.
MEE was established three years ago by former Gaga publicity head Taku Ushiyama and has been concentrating on publicity and PR for major releases in Japan.
MEE started with capital of 235 million yen ($2 million) and plans to diversify into film production and co-production, acquisition and distribution, as well as management and packaging of talent from Japan and Asia. MEE also has a branch in Shanghai.
“At this stage we will concentrate on pan-Asian productions, especially between China, Korea and Japan,” said Tadashiki. “But we are open to all interesting projects..”
Tadashiki, who left Gaga in March, helped build the company from a small video distributor some 16 years ago to one of Japan’s distrib powerhouses. He has developed relationships with major U.S. studios and worldwide production and sales companies.
