Robert De Niro on Monday announced that he has prostate cancer, but a spokesman for the actor said it was detected at an early stage, and doctors “project a full recovery.”
The actor’s announcement came via a press statement, but the rep did not elaborate with details about surgery or treatment, saying the actor is very private and didn’t want to discuss those things.
De Niro was scheduled to begin “Hide and Seek” at 20th Century Fox, which was to have begun lensing on Oct. 27 in Gotham. The spokesman deferred questions about the film to Fox.
“We’ve just learned of this ourselves, and we’re evaluating the situation,” said Flo Grace, a spokeswoman at the studio.
The John Polson-helmed psychological thriller co-stars Dakota Fanning and Famke Janssen (Daily Variety, Oct. 20).
“Hide” has not had the easiest of starts: Albert Hughes was to have directed the pic as his first outing as a solo director (Daily Variety, May 6) but walked away over what a studio spokesman billed as “creative differences” two months ago (Daily Variety, Aug. 28).
With De Niro aboard with a pay-or-play offer, the studio forged ahead and offered the pic to Polson.
