Event fetes late, 'outrageous' comedian
HOLLYWOOD — Comedians paid colorful tribute to the late Buddy Hackett at an Oct. 15 gala benefiting Singita Animal Sanctuary, a Hackett charity, at the El Capitan.
“He told me, ‘You gotta peel the onion. None of your jokes are finished yet, you think they are, but one minute you’ll be onstage and a sentence will come that will change the entire joke and set-up four more,’ ” Jay Mohr said in a dead-on Hackett impersonation.
“I liked his balls,” comedian Bob Goldthwait said. “Way before I did anything that people perceive as outrageous, here’s a guy that was swimming nude with dolphins on stage in Las Vegas.”
Hal Linden, Robert Forster and Red Buttons were among the 800-strong crowd listening to Sandy Hackett (Buddy’s son), Tom Arnold, Kevin Nealon, Bob Saget, Paul Rodriguez and Shecky Green quip about the legendary laffer.
