CanWest taps interim chair

McKenna has been a director of co. since 1999

TORONTO — Former politician Frank McKenna has been tapped interim chairman of the board at CanWest Global Communications. He succeeds CanWest Global founder Israel “Izzy” Asper, who died unexpectedly after suffering a heart attack Oct. 7.

“I am honored that Frank McKenna will take on the position of chairman of the company on an interim basis,” said CanWest prexy-CEO Leonard Asper in a statement, “and grateful to Mr. McKenna that he has agreed to add the heavy responsibilities of chairman to his already considerable contributions to the company.”

Premier of the province of New Brunswick from 1987-97, McKenna has been a director of CanWest since 1999. He will serve as chair until a permanent replacement is found.
