‘Beyond’ lavish bow

Pic, preem bash see parallels

Paramount’s “Beyond Borders” begins when Clive Owen‘s character, with an emaciated African child in tow, crashes a international aid dinner benefit and lambastes the guests for the number of starving children they could have saved by giving up the event’s niceties.

In an eyebrow-raising parallel, Par followed Monday night’s Ziegfeld preem with a lavish benefit bash for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at Cipriani 42nd Street. Revelers couldn’t resist talking to Daily Variety about the spread, which included two kinds of beet salad, caviar and every item in a Thanksgiving dinner.

But when Daily Variety pointed out the parallel to star Angelina Jolie, who’s quite active in international charity work, thesp brushed it off as a “negative” angle on the event, pointing out that most of the attendees are affiliated with the U.N.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan introduced the film, saving of refugees, “The reality that they face is far harsher than what we can appreciate from a comfortable seat in a well-appointed cinema.”

Attendees included Par’s Sherry Lansing; exec producer Peter Guber; helmer Martin Campbell; and guests including Barbara Walters.
