AFTRA OKs radio strike

Org sez members should refuse appearances

AFTRA’s national board has granted strike authorization at Clear Channel radio stations WLTW, WKTU, WAXQ and WWPR in New York.

The panel has also adopted a resolution urging members to refuse to make any appearances, perform or grant interviews for any of the Clear Channel-owned stations in New York until Clear Channel reaches a deal.

The boards for SAG and Actors’ Equity Assn. have passed similar resolutions.

AFTRA has been unable to negotiate renewal contracts with Clear Channel but bargaining has bogged down over the company’s demand to replace live announcers with out-of-state nonunion announcers through use of pre-recorded announcements, also known as “voice tracking.” AFTRA represents approximately 100 professional announcers at the five Clear Channel-owned stations in New York.

A “Keep NY Radio Live” rally will be held on Thursday at New York’s Bryant Park.
