ABC has said “I do” to a half-hour about divorced family from former “Drew Carey Show” braintrust Clay Graham, Bruce Rasmussen and Dave Caplan.
Trio will create, write and exec produce the comedy for Touchstone Television. All three scribes will serve as showrunner should the project, which has a premium script commitment, snag a greenlight.
Graham said he and his fellow scribes came up with the idea for the show after realizing previous skeins featuring divorced families “have almost always been judgmental. It’s been a negative portrayal.”
“There’d been nothing for kids to relate to on TV that said divorce isn’t the worst thing,” Graham said.
Untitled project will feature a couple who’ve been divorced for about a year. Their three kids live with mom, while dad is just a few blocks away.
“In some ways, we hope it can be more than a TV show; it can almost be a public service,” Graham said. “There’s never been a cool family portrayed that happens to be going through a divorce.”
Paradigm- repped Graham spent seven seasons as showrunner of “The Drew Carey Show”; his other credits include “Roseanne” and “Who’s the Boss.” Caplan is exec producing the ninth season of “Drew.”
All three men previously worked together on “Drew.”
