Kudos fete diversity

Hayek, Singleton among those honored

HOLLYWOOD — Diversity means many things, including Sesame Street’s Elmo kissing Debbie Allen and introducing his alter ego.

The Muppet drew large laughs at Tuesday’s Celebration of Diversity from his smooch and banter with emcee Allen and his surprised exclamation, “Oh, there’s a black man down there.” That prompted Elmo creator Kevin Clash to emerge from under the podium.

The second annual event, sponsored by the Producers Guild of America with Daily Variety, drew more than 500 attendees to the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Honorees included Elmo’s Sesame Street, Salma Hayek, Phil Roman, John Singleton, George Sunga, Christine Kunewa Walker, “Door to Door” producers Dan Angel, Billy Brown and David Rosemont, along with the Sundance Institute’s Native American Program.
