CBS has found its Gipper, casting James Brolin as Ronald Reagan in its upcoming mini “The Reagans.”
Brolin will star opposite Judy Davis’ Nancy Reagan in the four-hour production from Craig Zadan and Neil Meron’s Storyline Entertainment, which could be on the air as soon as this November (Daily Variety, June 5).
Pic, from Storyline and Hallmark Entertainment Distribution in association with Sony Pictures Television, will take a broad look at Reagan’s transition from thesp to politico, as well as his often-rocky family life. Robert Allan Ackerman is directing.
Brolin’s no stranger to the White House, having recently done a gubernatorial guest turn on “The West Wing.” Thesp’s recent feature roles include “Catch Me If You Can,” “Traffic” and “Master of Disguise”; he’s also set to appear in the upcoming Dimension thriller “Cursed.”
“We haven’t asked Barbra Streisand what she thinks about (husband) James Brolin playing Ronald Reagan, but we’ll have to live with that,” said CBS topper Leslie Moonves. Streisand is a noted liberal activist.
Moonves credited Zadan and Meron for the casting. “They were convinced that he was the right guy for it, and we backed them.”
Brolin’s most recent regular TV gig was “Pensacola: Wings of Gold,” distribbed by the Eye’s syndie unit.
