Tune titan taps new VP, retools licensing

Music major BMG has tapped inhouse legal eagle Deirdre McDonald to the newly created post of senior VP, industry and government relations. She will rep the company’s interest in legislation, regulation and policy issues.

Based in New York and reporting to operating chief Michael Smellie, exec will address piracy and other challenges brought on by new technologies affecting the biz. She will work closely with RIAA and the Intl. Federation of the Phonographic Industry.

McDonald was most recently VP of legal and business affairs at BMG, as well as the label’s chief litigation counsel for five years. Prior to that, she was at the law firm of White & Case, where she specialized in commercial litigation and international arbitration.

New licensing division

Separately, BMG is bringing all its film- and TV-licensing operations together in a new division, letting music supervisors shop the company’s vast recording and publishing catalogs under one roof in a first for a major label group.

Headed up by L.A.-based veep of film and TV music Ron Broitman, new division will include 16 staffers in Los Angeles and New York. On the East Coast, BMG will bolster its presence with a new creative and licensing administration team.

BMG owns the master recordings for albums by such acts as Elvis Presley, ‘N Sync and Christina Aguilera, while the company’s publishing division controls publishing rights for compositions by Santana, Nelly, Beck and Kenny G, among others.
