George, Juanes lead Grammy noms

See nomineesMIAMI — Producer and songwriter Sergio George topped the list of nominees for the fourth annual Latin Grammy Awards, with nods in six categories.

Nominees were announced July 22 in Miami for the upcoming kudofest, set to air live Sept. 3 on CBS from the city’s American Airlines Arena.

George’s nominations include record, song, and tropical song for Miami-based rock group Bacilos’ “Mi Primer Millon,” and album of the year for Bacilos’ Caraluna. He was nominated twice in tropical song category, the second nod for “La Salsa Vive” (performed by Tito Nieves).

Two tapped for five

Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, who has already won four Latin Grammys, followed with five nominations, for record of the year and song for “Es Por Ti,” album and rock solo vocal album for “Un Dia Normal,” and rock song for “Mala Gente.”

Producer Gustavo Santaolalla was also tapped for noms in five categories: album, classical album, producer and twice in the record of the year.

Coming in at four nominations were singer-songerwriter Natalia Lafouracade, for new artist, song and rock song for “En El 2000,” and rock solo vocal album for her self-titled debut; and engineer Anibal Kerpel, for album for his collaboration with Juanes, classical album for work with the Kronos Quartet, and two record of the year nominations for his work with Juanes and Molotov.

Nominees with three Latin nods include Bacilos, for record, album and pop album by a duo or group with vocal; Jorge Villamizar of Bacilos for song and tropical song for “Mi Primer Millon,” and song for “Caraluna”; Mexican rap-metal group Molotov, for record, rock album by a duo or group with vocal, and music video; and Brazilian pop trio Tribalistas, for record of the year, album and Brazilian contemporary pop album.

Artists with two nominations included Ricardo Arjona, David Bisbal, Ruben Blades, Elvis Crespo, Paquito D’Rivera, India, Milton Nascimento, Alexandre Pires, A.B. Quintanilla III, Joan Sebastian and Caetano Veloso, among others.

Having it their way

Separately, Burger King Corp. announced its exclusive sponsorship of the Latin Grammys.

The fast-food giant will provide hospitality and promotions for Latin Recording Academy national and local events.

On a national level, Burger King will support a Latin Grammy concert series, which kicks off Aug. 21 and runs through Sept. 1, with dates in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, Dallas and Houston.

Latin Grammy organizers had announced in May that Brazilian recording artist, Grammy and Latin Grammy-award winner, and current Brazilian minister of culture Gilberto Gil will be honored as the 2003 Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS) Person Of the Year at a Sept. 2 benefit dinner.

Previous-year honorees were Vicente Fernandez, Julio Iglesias and Emilio Estefan.

And the nominees are . . .
