Radio Television Serbia (RTS), Serbia’s largest broadcaster, will cut up to 800 jobs in the coming days in one of the largest downsizing campaigns in this nation’s television history.
RTS general manager Aleksandar Crkvenjakov said this round of firings will decrease the broadcaster’s workforce to about 3,600.
About 100 more layoffs will occur in second round of job cuts when regional branches of RTS TV Novi Sad, the state broadcaster for the northern Vojvodina province of Serbia, and TV Pristina, the broadcaster for the southern province of Kosovo, leave the network according to provisions contained within the new Broadcast Law.
“The problem is not in the numbers but in the quality,” Crkvenjakov said. “We need to arrive at a situation where we have a little over 3,500 top professionals who are well paid and satisfied.”
