Hike in ad revs helps net overtake top TV2 rival

BUDAPEST — Hungarian commercial broadcaster RTL Klub, controlled by pan-Euro broadcaster RTL, announced after-tax profits of 2 billion Hungarian forint ($8.8 million) in 2002, its best year since hitting the airwaves five years ago.

For years the underdog in a rating war with Hungary’s only other commercial national net, SBS-controlled TV2, RTL Klub rose to the No. 1 spot in late 2001.

RTL execs credit 2002 profits to the 20% increase in ad revenues due to its first-place status. TV2 is fighting to regain the top slot: It began airing “Big Brother” in the fall against RTL Klub’s copycat reality skein “Real World.”
