SARS claims ‘Mama’

World Brief

Mirvish Productions is shutting down its Toronto run of “Mamma Mia!” for July, August and September, as Sever Acute Respiratory Syndrome continues to spook U.S. tourists.

“With the collapse of tourism this summer along with the local community away on vacation, the hiatus is necessary for the long-term vitality of ‘Mama Mia!’ ” said a release from Mirvish Productions.

The musical has been a virtual sell-out since its May 2000 opening. Performances resume at the Princess of Wales Theater on Sept. 30, the day that Mirvish winds up “The Lion King,” also because of fallout from SARS, as announced earlier this week.
