'Camp,' 'Cooler,' 'Hypnotic' among films to screen

Specialty distribs will feature films from their upcoming skeds at ShoWest’s Indie Showcase, unspooling Monday, March 3 at Las Vegas’ Century Orleans 18 Theaters. Showings are at 6 and 9 p.m. for each film, with a reception from 8 to 9 p.m. co-hosted by Dolby Labs and the Newspaper Assn. of America in between the screenings.The films are:

Camp, IFC Films

Director, Todd Graff; cast, Daniel Letterle, Joanna Chilcoat

Set at a summer camp for young performers, the musical tells the story of a former Broadway songwriter who has to work at the camp because his career has burned out.

The Cooler, Lions Gate Films

Director, Wayne Kramer; cast, William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin

One of the last mob-run casinos in Vegas, the Shangri-La Hotel and Casino, decides to use Bernie (Macy) as a “cooler” to defuse gamblers’ lucky streaks. The scheme goes fine until Bernie falls in love with a cocktail waitress.

Hypnotic, First Look Pictures

Director Nick Willing; cast, Goran Visnjic, Paddy Considine

Story of an American insomniac hypnotherapist (Visnjic) with telepathic powers enlisted by Scotland Yard to help in talking to a young mute girl who escaped from a ritualistic serial killer.

Whale Rider, Newmarket Films

Director, Nick Caro; cast, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Rawiri Paratene

A Maori tribe must contend with a female as their leader after her twin brother dies at childbirth, and she must struggle to prove herself.

Winged Migration, Sony Pictures Classics

Director, Jacques Perrin

Five teams (more than 450 people, including 17 pilots and 14 cinematographers) were necessary to follow a variety of bird migrations through 40 countries and across each of the seven continents.
