Industry wondering which clients will move, too

NEW YORK — Never say never.

Creative Artists Agency is opening a New York office for George Lane, who recently ankled the William Morris Agency. Lane will be the big exception for CAA, which has long resisted the notion of opening a base of operations in Manhattan.

Michael Cardonick follows Lane to his new CAA digs. He had been Lane’s assistant at William Morris, where he was recently promoted to agent in charge of foreign rights. In addition to those duties, Cardonick had repped Jonathan Tolins, whose play “The Last Sunday in June” opened at Rattlestick in February and makes the commercial transfer to the Century in April.

When news broke earlier this week that Lane was going to CAA, many producers and rival agents assumed he would be leaving Gotham to set up shop at the agency’s Beverly Hills headquarters.

Now that the location question has been answered, a couple of big ones remain: 1) which legit clients will Lane take with him, and 2) how will this maverick star agent fit into the team-player world of CAA?

Two assistants will round out Lane’s CAA operation in Gotham. Those offices are to be located in Greenwich Village on West 10th Street, just off Fifth Avenue, and Lane & Co. will share them with Youth Intelligence, which CAA recently acquired. Jane Buckingham’s media consultancy specializes in marketing and focus groups directed at 12- to 40-year-olds.

Before Lane, the Joyce Ketay Agency, among other Gotham tenpercenteries, had an ongoing relationship with many CAA clients to represent them on legit deals.

“We’ve worked with CAA clients in the past, and we expect to work with them in the future,” said Ketay partner Carl Mulert. “Nothing has led us to believe anything is different.”
