B’way-bound ‘Harvey’ to start Wang season

Cavett, Durning announced as stars

SOUTHBURY, Conn. — A Broadway-bound revival of Mary Chase’s 1944 Pulitzer Prize-winning screwball comedy “Harvey,” produced by Don Gregory and directed by Charles Nelson Reilly, is set to play Boston’s Shubert Theater on Sept. 9-21, immediately before New York.

Prior to Boston, the production will play the Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, Calif., July 8-Aug. 31. The cast hasn’t been firmed yet, but publicity in Boston has announced Dick Cavett and Charles Durning as the production’s stars.

The new “Harvey” will open the 2003-04 season of Boston’s Wang Center for the Performing Arts, which will be presented in both the vast Wang as well as the smaller Shubert immediately opposite it in downtown Beantown.

Tour stops

The other Wang Center attractions at the Shubert announced by the Wang’s president-CEO, Josiah A. Spaulding Jr., are a touring revival of “Hair” (Jan. 20-Feb. 1) and a week of the “Nunsense 20th Anniversary All-Star Tour” starring Kaye Ballard, Georgia Engel, Mimi Hines, Darlene Love and Lee Meriwether, directed by “Nunsense” creator Dan Goggin (Feb. 10-15).

Other offerings at the Wang itself will be “The Sound of Music” (Sept. 16-21), Big League Theatricals’ “Miss Saigon” (Sept. 23-28), “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (Oct. 7-12), “Chicago” (Nov. 4-9), Cameron Mackintosh’s production of “Oliver!” (March 2-7) and “Starlight Express” (April 27-May 2, 2004).

The nonprofit Wang Center is an investor in Broadway and touring shows, such as “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and a new touring production of “Starlight Express.” In addition to housing touring shows at the Wang and the Shubert, the Wang Center presents a variety of locally based productions in its two theaters including those by the Boston Ballet, Boston Lyric Opera and FleetBoston Celebrity Series.
