NEW YORK — Broadway grosses rose during Week 8 (July 14-20). The total was up by 4% to $13,799,929. Attendance also increased, by 2.8%, to 205,683.
Major increases were the norm at most tuners, with “Thoroughly Modern Millie” leading the gains, up by $127,110 to $724,055. Up by significant five-figure sums were Disney’s “Aida” and “Beauty and the Beast,” “42nd Street,” “The Producers” and “Man of La Mancha.” The latter show announced a closing date of Aug. 31.
With Melanie Griffith joining the cast as Roxie Hart, “Chicago” sold out and grossed near its potential at the Ambassador: $661,393.
The 19 musicals grossed $12,523,605 for 90.8% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 184,980 at 91.7% of capacity.
The four plays grossed $1,276,324 for 9.2% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 20,703 at 74.1% of capacity.
Average ticket prices were $67.70 for musicals, $61.65 for plays and $67.09 for all shows.
