Actors Co-op founder Schall dies

Thesp's final TV role will be an episode of 'ER'

David Schall, 53, a founding member of Actors Co-op, died Friday night of a heart attack in Hollywood, 1-1/2 hours before the opening night curtain of “Uncle Vanya,” in which he was a cast member.

The show’s opening night, along with its gala, were postponed until April 25 while Schall’s part is re-cast. There was no understudy for his role.

The company’s other running production, “As It Is in Heaven,” performed as scheduled Friday despite the cast being told of Schall’s death 10 minutes before curtain. In the Crossley Terrace Theater, where “Uncle Vanya” will be staged, members of the company simply shared stories of Schall on Friday night.

Schall co-founded Actors Co-op in 1987. He went on to create Inter-Mission, Act One: Writing for Hollywood and recently launched Hollywood 101. He began Inter-Mission in New York City and other cities around the country. He has received six Drama-Logue awards for producing and one for ensemble performance.

Schall’s final TV role will be an episode of “ER” to air May 1, in which he plays a minister at a funeral.

He is survived by his parents Fred and Grace Schall, one sister, two brothers, nieces and nephews all of Pennsylvania.

Schall will be buried in Pennsylvania and a memorial service will be held in Hollywood at a later date.
