Classy Japanese remake of Korean pic "Ditto" (reportedly the first such conversion in three decades), with the romantic fantasy's original producer in charge, "Scent of Time" could inspire a Hollywood redo, too, even if some viewers note a more than passing similarity to "Frequency" -- albeit in quieter vein. Fests should come sniffing, and vid market could be rosy as well.

Korean version utilized that nation’s tough political history to tell tale of a boy and girl who meet and sort of fall in love over a ham radio that bridges a 20-year time warp. Sweeter Nippon update takes gentle look at economic bubble that bursts between 1979 and 2001, the wormhole that separates Yuri (Kazue Fukiishe) and Yuri (Takumi Saito), who attend the same university. Their connection proves to be much more important over time, of course, and pic eschews original’s downbeat ending in favor of satisfyingly upbeat closer. Lovingly shot, thoughtfully nostalgic pic was known at home as “Remember Me,” although title actually translates as “Memory of Scent.”
