Three Continents docufest heads for S. Africa

Projects' content deals with human rights-related themes

JOHANNESBURG — The second Intl. Three Continents Documentary Film Festival, to be held in South Africa from September 3 to 24, aims to provide a platform for fostering increased human rights awareness in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The first fest was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Festival director Rehad Desai said the 2003 event would be a forum for documentary films whose form and content dealt with human rights related themes and stories from the continents and was calling on filmmakers from Asia, Africa and Latin America to submit entries by June 1.

“Unless we are aware of our rights as human beings we will fail to create communities where individuals are valued and allowed the chance to achieve success. The featured works will provide powerful narratives that humanize those struggles fought in the name of liberation and social, political and economic empowerment,” said Desai.

He said the festival would travel to all the major urban centers of South Africa, as well as provide for a broader audience with screenings in predominantly black township areas and poor rural communities.

Interested filmmakers can get information and entry forms from the festival website, www.3continentsfestival.co.za, or contact the organizers at info@3continentsfestival.co.za .
