Fest touts world preems of 'Stormy,' 'Want, ' Final'
VANCOUVER — Helmer Alan Rudolph will be at the Victoria Independent Film & Video Festival on Friday when it kicks off with his pic, “Investigating Sex.”Rudolph will also be on hand for a master class in direction at the fest, which wraps on Feb. 16 with David Cronenberg’s creepy “Spider.” World preems include Larry Weinstein’s Toronto-shot “Stormy Weather,” an experimental docudrama about “Wizard of Oz” composer Harold Arlen, “Want,” a digital helming debut for software designer Michael Wohl — the maven behind fave-rave editing program Final Cut Pro — and “Final Draft,” comedy from Israeli-Americans Oren Goldman and Yariv Ozdoba, who wrote, helmed and star in the pic. Some B.C.-made efforts continuing their roll across Canada are “Flower & Garnet,” “Saint Monica,” “E.V.O.” and “Say I Do.” Local docus “Criminal Acts” and “From Baghad to Peace Country” also make timely bows at the 9th fest. Special programs include workshops on animation and new media and a series of talks on Bernardo Bertolucci, with fans buttered up for an unspooling of the Italo helmer’s “Last Tango in Paris.”
