Scola’s ‘Roma’ opens Europa Cinema

Homage to Eternal City will unspool out of competition

ROME — Ettore Scola’s “Gente di Roma” (People of Rome) will open the 20th Europa Cinema, which will host world preems of eight European productions.

The veteran Italian helmer’s homage to the Eternal City will unspool out of competition to kick off the event dedicated to European fare, which takes place Sept. 21-27 in Viareggio on the Tuscan coast.

Among pics competing for Europa Cinema’s Platinum Awards are British director Matt Dickinson’s “Cloud Cuckoo Land”; Italy’s “Pontormo,” starring Joe Mantegna as the Renaissance painter Jacopo Pontormo; and “Dedales,” from France’s Rene Manzor, are among entries competing for Europa Cinema’s Platinum Awards.

An ample selection of docus will include two special events: Swedish director Gunnar Berghass’ “Intermezzo,” an homage to Ingmar Bergman, and Elfriede Gaeng’s “Ciao Anna,” dedicated to Anna Magnani.

The Italian premiere of Joel Schumacher’s “Veronica Guerin,” about the crusading Irish journalist, will close the event.

Italian auteur Francesco Maselli heads the jury, which includes Brazilian actress Florinda Bolkan and German producer Ulrich Felsberg.

Fest is headed by Felice Laudadio, who founded Europa Cinema in 1984 and left it to head the Venice fest from 1997-98. Laudadio also heads the Taormina Film Fest.
