Helmer Hector Babenco’s “Carandiru” notched-up the largest opening weekend for a local pic in ten years, selling 468,293 tickets and grossing 3.5 million reais ($1.15 million) from Friday to Monday.
Carandiru, produced by Babenco’s Ironweed, is also leading this year’s openings, which is unusual for a local pic. The previous topper, “Die Another Day,” sold 442,297 tickets in its Jan opening.
Co-producer and distrib Columbia launched the pic countrywide with 247 copies, a large release by local standards.
The third co-producer is local media giant Organizacoes Globo’s theatrical arm Globo Filmes, which kicked in advertising on the group’s broadcaster TV Globo.
The pic is based on Drauzio Varella’s best seller about his time as a physician in Carandiru, Sao Paulo, Latin America’s largest prison.
