MTV Latin America renames kudofest

Awards take place in Mexico City

MIAMI — MTV Latin America is celebrating its tenth anniversary in the territory by renaming its May 28 Mexican pix kudofest “MTV Movie Awards Mexico.”

MTV launched “Pelicula de la Gente” (Film of the People) in 2001. The awards, which take place in Mexico City, are not as elaborate as the U.S. show but may be a precursor to a bigger event.

MTV viewers will vote for the Mexican winners online on or via text message on Sony Ericsson cellular phones until May 18. Voters will have a chance to enter to win tickets to the party in Mexico City on May 28 or the U.S. awards in LA on May 31. One grand prizewinner will go to both events.

Nominees for the Mexican kudos were selected by a committee of MTV staff from pics released between April 1, 2002 and March 31.

Highlights from the Mexican awards’ after-party will air before the “MTV US Movie Awards” on June 19.
