Mais takes on Col TriStar/BVI deal

Film co. to distrib 20 pics in 14 months

RIO DE JANEIRO — Local distribber Mais Filmes will handle Columbia TriStar Buena Vista Filmes do Brasil’s art and indie films in Brazil.

Mais will distribute about 20 films in 14 months including Phillip Noyce’s “The Quiet American,” starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser.

The first pic under the deal is Italian Gabriele Muccino’s “The Last Kiss,” which opened Jan 24 in Sao Paulo.

“They will profit from our expertise in distribution of art films,” said Adhemar Oliveira, one of the five partners in Mais Filmes. “And we will have access to more films at a lower cost.”

The partners in Mais Films also own Circuito Cinarte, a national, 26-screen arthouse chain. However, the pics distributed under the deal will not be limited to this exhib.

Columbia TriStar and BVI have a joint theatrical distribution biz in Latin America. The operation will continue to distribute the big studio releases and other films that will attract larger auds, including locally-produced Brazilian features for which they have distrib rights.
