VENICE — Admissions in Italy grew 5.3% to 51.6 million and B.O. improved 7% to 307.7 million euros ($284 million) between January and August, compared with the same frame last year, according to national box office compiler Cinetel.
“Those are pretty terrific results if we consider that ticket sales in Spain and France have been decreasing,” said UIP Italia chief Richard Borg, who is also president of distributors trade organization Unidim. “We expect the upward trend to continue thanks to a period rich in strong product.”
Italy’s small but significant increase in moviegoers is largely due to the proliferation of multiplexes, which now account for roughly half of the country’s screens.
