‘Hours’ duo get USC script win

Kudos honors English-lingo film adaptation

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham and screenwriter David Hare are the winners of USC’s 15th annual Scripter Award for their collaboration on “The Hours.” Nod honors the best English-language film adaptation of a book or novella.

“I want to congratulate not just Mr. Hare and Mr. Cunningham but all the nominees for the intelligence, talent and, indeed, the originality that informed these adaptations,” said director-scribe Robert Towne on behalf of the Friends of the USC Libraries, which sponsors the award.

This year’s winners were chosen by a 56-person selection committee that included members of the Writers Guild of America, Academy Award-winning and -nominated screenwriters, authors, film industry executives and faculty in addition to members of the Friends of the USC Libraries.

A black-tie dinner will be held March 15 at USC’s Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library to present Cunningham and Hare with the award.
