Costumers tap Tosi

Award-winner plans to send a video message

The Costume Designers Guild has tapped five-time Oscar nominee Piero Tosi as recipient of its first President’s Award.

Kudos will be presented at the fifth annual Costume Designers Guild Awards March 16 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

“It’s the guild’s intent with its new annual President’s Award to reach within and beyond the borders of English-language countries,” said CDG prexy Deborah Nadoolman Landis. “I’m proud that Piero Tosi is our first choice for this award.”

Tosi will not be able to attend but plans to send a video message. He received Academy Award costume design noms for “The Leopard,” “Death in Venice,” “Ludwig,” “La cage aux folles” and “La Trivet.”

Tosi’s first costume designing assignment came at the age of 22 for 1951’s “Bellissma” with Anna Magnani. He also created designs for “The Damned,” “Toby Dammit” and “The Night Porter.”
