Constantin’s Hitler pic taps Ganz as its fuhrer

Film to be epic about final days of Nazi regime

BERLIN — Swiss actor Bruno Ganz will star as Adolf Hitler in Constantin Film’s “Der Untergang — Hitler und das Ende des 3. Reichs” (“The Downfall — Hitler and the End of the Third Reich”), which begins shooting this summer in St. Petersburg.

The $15 million pic, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and co-produced by pubcaster ARD, also stars Juliane Koehler (“Nowhere in Africa”) as Eva Braun, Corinna Harfouch as Magda Goebbels, Ulrich Noethen as Heinrich Himmler and Alexandra Maria Lara as Hitler’s personal secretary.

Constantin topper Bernd Eichinger, whose screenplay was based on Junge’s personal writings as well as on Joachim Fest’s book of the same name, described the project as “a grand epic film” that would be as authentic as possible to history.

The film will not be about Hitler per se, but rather about the final days of the Nazi regime, he added.
