City backs Rio fest

World Brief

The Rio Intl. Film Festival, Latin America’s largest, has inked a 3 million reais ($1.05 million) sponsorship deal with the city of Rio. The extra funds means the event, to unspool Sept. 25-Oct. 9, will not have to cut its program.

The city support compensates for cuts by the fest’s former exclusive sponsor, state-owned oil company BR Distribuidora. Its backing has fallen from $1.4 million in 2002 to $840,000 this year.

Fest will feature a retrospective of Italian helmer Mario Monicelli, and director Clint Eastwood will present his latest pic, “Mystic River.”
