Cinema Expo honors Odeon topper Segal

Exec to be feted at awards gala June 26

HOLLYWOOD — Richard Segal, CEO of U.K. circuit Odeon, will be honored as exhib of the year at Cinema Expo 2003, organizers said Wednesday.

Segal will be feted at an awards gala set to close the trade show June 26. Cinema Expo opens June 23 at Amsterdam’s RAI Convention Center.

“Richard Segal’s energy, dedication and great business sense have helped strengthen Odeon’s position as the exhibition brand leader in the U.K. marketplace,” said Mitch Neuhauser, Cinema Expo’s group show director. “We are pleased to honor both Richard and Odeon, (as) both have set new standards of excellence in exhibition.”

Odeon was acquired in March by a consortium of investors including the Principal Finance Group, the Entertainment Group and Robert Tchenguiz of Rotch Property Group. Previously, Odeon was sold by the Rank Group to the Cinven venture capital firm in February 2000.

Company expanded

At that time, the circuit was combined with the Cinven-owned ABC Cinemas. With Segal installed at the helm of those combined operations, the company opened nine multiplexes, refurbished 45 cinemas and sold 43 sites while maintaining its dominant position with a roughly 25% market share of British box office.

Segal was an original member of the U.K.’s Film Policy Review Group. He sits on the exec board of the Cinema Exhibitors Assn., is a member of the Film Skills Action Group and is a director of the Business in Sport & Leisure lobbying group.

Past Cinema Expo honorees include Eduardo Malone and Europalaces, Guy Verrecchia and UGC, Joe Peixoto and United Cinemas Intl., Albert Bert and Kinepolis, Klas Olofsson and Sandrew-Metronome, Millard Ochs and Warner Bros. Intl. Theaters, Volker Riech and UFA, Per Tengblad and Lennart Wiklund of SF Bio and Achim Flebbe of H.J. Flebbe.
