Pic's opening only behind Babenco's 'Carandiru'

RIO DE JANEIRO — “Os Normais” (The Regular Ones), based on the popular TV comedy of the same name, sold 421,000 tickets in its first weekend, making it the second biggest opening of a local production in the past 10 years.

It’s behind only Hector Babenco’s prison drama “Carandiru,” released earlier this year.

The “Os Normais” series wrapped recently after three seasons of high ratings on leading broadcaster TV Globo.

Pic is co-produced by MI5, Globo Filmes (TV Globo’s sister theatrical production company) and Lumiere, which also is distributing. TV Globo is supporting the release with a massive publicity campaign.

Series helmer Jose Alvarenga Jr. and writers Alexandre Machado and Fernanda Young were tapped for the pic.

Series stars Fernanda Torres and Luiz Fernando Guimaraes reprise their roles of Vani and Rui, respectively.

While the TV show focused on their crazy relationship, the film goes back in time to their first meeting and how the Rio couple fell in love.

Bruno Wainer, executive director of Lumiere, said he expects the pic to sell 2 million-2.5 million tickets.

If so, “Os Normais” will join just eight local productions with more than 2 million admissions in the past decade.

Virtually all locally produced films that have been commercial successes have Globo Filmes as a co-production partner and the backing of the TV Globo promotional machine.
