Belgrade film fest opens

'Torsion,' 'Quiet American,' 'Mahler' among screenings

BUDAPEST — The 31st Belgrade Intl. Film Festival kicked off on Friday , beginning a 10-day run of screenings of some 95 feature films and documentaries.

Guests include French actor and singer Charles Aznavour, Vietnamese actresses Do Thi Hai Yen and Quang Hai, French thesp Anna Mouglalis and helmer Stefan Arsenijevic, who won the Golden Bear at Berlin for the short film “(A) Torsion.”

“(A) Torsion” and Philip Noyce’s “The Quiet American” were screened on opening night in Belgrade’s Sava Centar convention hall. Fest will also host a retrospective of the films of Brit helmer Ken Russell, screening his features “Women in Love,” “Mahler” and “Savage Messiah.” While in the Serbian capital, Russell will receive the Golden Seal honor from the Yugoslav Film Archive Museum.
