LONDON — South African owned U.K. cinema chain Ster Century was sold to Aurora Holdings, whose partners include its former Ster Century Europe honchos Mike Ross and Theo Fonternel.
The chain was acquired from Royale Resorts and Primedia. No figures were released for the deal, which was backed by Inflexion Private Equity and concluded Friday.
Ross and Fonternel pioneered Ster’s expansion in the late nineties. “I welcome the opportunity to return to the mainstream cinema business, managing the multiplexes I helped build, and look forward to nurturing Ster Century in its development as the premier quality multiplex circuit in the UK and Ireland,” said Ross, soon-to-be CEO of Ster Century.
Ster Century owns and operates 87 screens across seven multiplexes in the U.K. and one in Dublin where the first European Ster Century cinema was opened in 1999. The circuit has since grown to a marketshare of 3%.
