Arclight shines on new topper for L.A.

Exec to oversee sales, acquisitions

Nicolas Chartier has been tapped to head the L.A. office of Australia-based production and sales entity Arclight Films.

In his new post Chartier will now oversee all sales and acquisitions activity and will serve as the point person between Arclight, partner Spice Factory and film fund Movision.

He replaces Arclight’s former L.A. head Michael Stone.

Chartier reports to managing director Gary Hamilton. Hamilton launched the firm in May 2002 with financier Victor Syrmis, who is Arclight’s chairman.

In addition to sales and acquisitions, Chartier will also be responsible for finding films with European and Australian content for Arclight to co-produce and finance internationally. Company is also looking to work with studio-based producers with European projects and to find quality product to release either independently or through the studio system.

Chartier was formerly VP of sales and acquisitions at Myriad Pictures in 1999; in August 2001 he launched Vortex Pictures, a foreign sales company owned by Gold Circle Films that has worked on such pix as “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” “The Man From Elysian Fields,” “Sonny” and “Poolhall Junkies.”

Arclight’s current slate includes “Head in the Clouds,” for helmer John Duigan, starring Penelope Cruz and Charlize Theron; “A Different Loyalty,” starring Sharon Stone and Rupert Everett; and “Love’s Brother,” starring Giovanni Ribisi and Adam Garcia.

“This is the beginning of a very productive association and I look forward to helping Arclight expand and further develop an international presence,” said Chartier.
