AFI aud nod to ‘America’

'Dare' also receives kudo, while 'Fragile' takes short prize

Jim Sheridan’s “In America” took home the top Audience Award at the closing ceremonies of AFI Fest 2003 on Sunday.

Audience Award winners also included a docu nod to Amanda Micheli for “Double Dare,” while German helmer Sikander Goldau won the short award for “Fragile.”

Closing ceremony at the ArcLight in Hollywood also included the world premiere of Patty Jenkins’ “Monster,” starring Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci. Both actresses were in attendance.

Sheridan’s semi-autobiographical “In America” concerns an Irish family living in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen; it stars Samantha Morton, Paddy Considine and sisters Sarah and Emma Bolger.

Sheridan is best known for helming “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father.” Last year he executive produced “Bloody Sunday.”
