HOLLYWOOD — Sigourney Weaver has come aboard to play the female lead in director M. Night Shyamalan’s next pic “The Woods” for the Walt Disney Co.
Weaver joins other ensemble cast members — William Hurt, Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard — in the thriller that starts shooting Oct. 14 in Philadelphia.
Story, set in 1897, concerns a close-knit community and a mythical race of creatures residing in the nearby forest.
Weaver will play Alice, the mother of Phoenix’s character.
Shyamalan, who penned the script, is producing with Scott Rudin and Sam Mercer. Walt Disney Studios chairman Richard Cook and Buena Vista Motion Pictures prexy Nina Jacobson are overseeing the project.
Weaver, repped by WMA, most recently starred in Disney’s “Holes” and Focus Features’ “The Guys.”
