Quickly-made pic now searching for new release date
Universal has postponed the release of its spring break reality pic “The Quest” until later this year. Pic was scheduled to open May 9, two weeks after New Line releases “The Real Cancun.”
Adam Fogelson, U marketing prexy, said that once New Line laid claim to April 25, Universal saw no point in rushing to be second.
“They were two weeks earlier. We thought, ‘Why not take the time and do it the right way?'” Fogelson said. “When we were looking at May 9, everything in the process was accelerated. Now we will not have to continue at that pace.”
U distribution prexy Nikki Rocco said the studio was looking for a better date to “blow this out as a genre pic.”
“The Quest” is being produced by Mike Fleiss’ reality TV outfit Next Entertainment (“The Bachelor”).
Both “Cancun” and “Quest,” follow the romantic exploits of young people during spring break, with heavy helpings of wet T-shirt contest footage along the way.
Shortly after wrapping production in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Fleiss told Daily Variety, “The only award we want is an award from the Guinness Book of World Record for fastest movie ever made.”
“The Real Cancun,” which is being produced by Bunim-Murray (“The Real World”), may have a shot at that record, as its release date is a mere 33 days after 10 days of shooting wrapped March 23.
