Spyglass Entertainment has come onboard to co-finance Miramax Films’ high-profile English-language remake of top-grossing Japanese pic “Shall We Dance.”
Miramax will release pic domestically, with Spyglass handling all foreign territories excluding Japan.
Peter Chelsom (“Serendipity”) is directing the $50 million-budgeted pic, which stars Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere in the tale of a dance teacher and a staid working man wishing to learn ballroom dancing — primarily to impress her.
Pic, scripted by Audrey Wells, is being produced by Simon Fields, Chelsom’s longtime producing partner.
Production of the pic recently shifted from Toronto to Winnipeg for a June production start.
Spyglass recently teamed with Miramax’s Dimension Films and Disney’s Touchstone Pictures on “Mr. 3000,” starring Bernie Mac for helmer Charles Stone.
