Revolution Studios has optioned Tim Farrington’s novel, “The Monk Downstairs,” for Julia Roberts’ production shingle, Red Om Films, and “About Schmidt” producer Michael Besman.
Ron Nyswaner, who wrote “Philadelphia,” is adapting the script.
Besman is producing the project with Red Om and Revolution partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
The novel is a romantic dramedy about a single mother tired of the dating world who rents an apartment in her house to a man who has spent the last 20 years in a monastery.
Farrington, repped by CAA, published the book with HarperSanFrancisco. The New York Times cited it as one of the notable books of 2002.
Revolution’s Rachael Horovitz brought the project into the studio.
Red Om is now producing “Mona Lisa Smile,” set for release from Revolution in late 2003.
Besman, who recently partnered with producer Lynda Obst, is developing “The Sweetest Fig” at Sony.
Nyswaner is repped by Endeavor.
