Lou E. Perez has founded production shingle Checkmate Entertainment.
Managed with actor-producer Mario Lopez, the equity-backed company plans to produce two films a year each budgeted at $10 million-$20 million.
Inaugural project is “The Car Thief,” a comedy written by Michael Addis (“Poor White Trash”). Mark Roberts and Lorena David, who will produce, brought project to Checkmate.
Perez is the founder of Checkmate Staffing, which he launched in 1991 out of Orange County and now has 63,000 employees worldwide and offices in 12 states and four countries.
Credits for Roberts and David include “Plump Fiction,” “Eastside,” “Outta Time” and “Extreme Dating.” They are currently prepping “Strangers With Candy,” a feature based on the Comedy Central series.
